Mail Me...

...to someplace warm!

That's what Gene Ballance, our County Commissioner, imagined this post office cat thinking. Gene took the picture last week, when the temperature was in the upper 30s. I had just returned from a brisk walk on the beach when Gene pointed the cat out to me.

A number of stray cats spend most of their time at the post office, fed and cared for by various island cat lovers.

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is about several early 20th century itinerants who traveled to Ocracoke, including the story of "Blackie of the North Woods ". You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news022810.htm.

Now we know why the USPS is going broke.

Wait a minute the post office does not have a monopoly on delivering mail. Many have turned to electronic means ( E-mail) faxing documents and on line banking applying to college on line registering our purchases warranty info on line etc. It is in competition with other vendors offering mailing services ( Fed Ex UPS etc. and packaging services peanuts any one?? The postal service is an institution that should not be allowed to wither on the vine. We have the Forestry Service, The park Service both organizations rely heavily on volunteers ; friends of whatever park group and donations Can this be said about the postal service. In large urban areas the corner post office branch may not be perceived as the likes of an ocracoke Post office folksey and a community gather ing spot but your magazines, professional journals travel post cards , ebay purchases mail order items are the life blood of the organization and at present these items are processed in a manner that is ont perceeived as a lucrative venture by the others in brown or other color uniforms. The trains are returning to areas and perhaps the mail with cross the coutry in rail road cars once again?? Please support your local post office Ben Franklin thought it was a good thing
