USACE

The US Army Corps of Engineers dredge, Merritt, has been working for months deepening ferry channels around Ocracoke. The Merritt is a side discharge dredge. Other types of dredges commonly working in our coastal waters include pipeline dredges (they pump the discharge through pipes to a remote location), and hopper dredges (they pump their discharge into an on-board hopper, then dump their load in deeper water at some distance from the channel).
