Paws and Tales

Island resident, Pat Garber, has just published her latest book, Paws and Tales.

From the back cover:

"Set on Ocracoke Island, Paws and Tales is an endearing story told in the words of Kali, a sailboat cat, and Harvey, an island dog. When Kali sails into the Ocracoke harbor with her person Sam, she senses that something unusual is about to happen.

"When a goofy but loveable Doberman pinscher called Harvey chases her off the edge of a dock, she finds herself adrift in an underworld of homeless cats, while Harvey and his person Emily ruefully regret the whole incident. What follows changes the lives of them all."

This book is not yet in our catalog, but you can order it from Village Craftsmen by calling 252-928-5541, Tuesday - Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm. 122 pages, $14.95 + $3.50 shipping (shipping fee offer valid through Dec. 31, 2014).

This month's Ocracoke Newsletter is the seldom told story of the 1837 murder of Willis Williams by Jacob Gaskill. You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news112114.htm.

Pat, we are sure your book is great. Now a request, please another nature book for the all the outdoor people that vacation and visit Ocracoke. When you visit Ocracoke you spend 99% of your awake time outdoors. Kayaking, bike riding, tromping through the mudflats, dodging the big waves while walking on the beach sand, catching crabs, digging clams, swatting mosquitos, paddeling the creeks, picking up once living things on the beach and wondering what - in - the - heck is this? You are great at this. Well.....at least consider this idea. By the way, Merry Christmas.
    A daily reader of Philip.....

Since Ocracoke Wild has gone out of print, I am hoping to publish a revised edition with some new stories included. Thanks for your encouragement! Pat

  2. Lots of people on Hatteras and Ocracoke endear the feral cats and try to help them. However some locals trap and persecute them.
Cats can teach us about love and life.
I read "A Streetcat Named Bob" and found it very touching.
There are lots of stories to be told.
"Paws and Tales" should be a big hit.

This intrigued me, but was wondering if it was a book for adults or would it be an acceptable read for children as well?

I wrote Paws and Tales for adult readers, though it is appropriate for young adults as well. I like to say that it is for the inner child still found in most of us grown-ups. There is a short scene when Harvey the dog wonders why his person Emily and Kali's person Sam go upstairs and tell him he has to stay downstairs, but that is about as X-rated as it gets. Pat
